Standards Alive events are interactive learning experiences that demonstrate how New Jersey’s education standards can be taught through experiments and activities.

Pictured (left) is Morris County Park Commission Educational Coordinator Lesley Parness with New Jersey United Executive Director Mary O'Malley at the Standards Alive event held at Frelinghuysen Arboretum on Sunday, October 20, 2002.

Participants prepare to make their own woodland biodome at the Standards Alive "Terrarium" station.

At the Standards Alive "Cross Section" station, family inquiry teams learn about the concept of a cross section by studying a plant cell through a microscope, and viewing a cross section of a candy bar.

At the Standards Alive "Chocolate Nation" station, students make and decorate a rain stick to take home after learning about the growth of cocoa in the rainforests of South America.

About Standards Alive

At Standards Alive, participants visit different learning stations as a family. Each station offers a fun, hands-on learning experience while addressing one of New Jersey’s Core Curriculum Content Standards. The goal of Standards Alive is to help parents understand what is going on in their child’s classroom, demonstrate that learning opportunities exist everywhere, and encourage learning as a family.

To date, New Jersey United has co-hosted two Standards Alive events, both at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum’s Haggerty Education Center in Morris County. For more information on these events, click here.

A third Standards Alive is scheduled for May 1, 2005 at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm. For more information on this event, please click here.

Selected Learning Stations

Here is more information on selected learning stations from previous Standards Alive events:

Capillary Action Station—Watch Water Go Up
At this station, students experimented with capillary action and chose a colored carnation to take home.

Standard Addressed: Science 5.1—Scientific Processes

Propagation Station—One Plant Makes Many
At this station, students saw a working greenhouse, learned about propagation, and propagated their own plant.

Standard Addressed: Science 5.5—Characteristics of Life

Classification Station—Organize a Plant Family
At this station, students identified and sorted flowers and made a “family tree” placemat.

Standard Addressed: Science 5.5—Characteristics of Life

Cross-Section Station—Practice Core Imaging
At this station, students learned about plant anatomy and the concept of a cross section by studying the cross section of a candy bar.

Standard Addressed: Science 5.5—Characteristics of Life

Decomposition Station—Adopt a Worm
At this station, students learned about decomposition, saw a compost bin, and “adopted” a worm.

Standard Addressed: Science 5.10—Environmental Studies

Terrarium Station—Create a Woodland Biodome
At this station, students learned about the cycle of water in the environment and made their own terrarium to take home.

Standard Addressed: Science 5.6—Chemistry

Triangulation Station—Measure With Your Thumb
At this station, students took a “timber cruise” to measure trees using the concept of triangulation.

Standard Addressed: Science 5.3—Mathematical Applications

Observation Station—Meet Some Backyard Creatures
At this station, students viewed a photography exhibit and made a wildlife bookmark.

Standard Addressed: Science 5.10—Environmental Studies

Information Station—Gather Library Skills
At this station, students researched an “assignment” and learned good library manners.

Standard Addressed: Science 5.1—Scientific Processes

Scentsation Station
At this station, students learned about explorer E.H. Wilson and the concept of scent making. Students used math skills to create their own custom scent.

Standard Addressed: Science 5.3—Mathematical Applications

Preservation Station
At this station, students learned how the plant press helped scientists reveal plant anatomy and record plant history. Students then assembled and decorated their own plant press to bring home.

Standard Addressed: Science 5.5—Characteristics of Life

Adaptation Station
At this station, students learned how explorer Mary Treat got “bogged down” in the Highlands. Students then created their own model carnivorous plant and got a Venus Fly Trap plant to take home.

Standard Addressed: Science 5.8—Earth Science

Chocolate Nation Station
At this station, students learned about growing cocoa and the South American Rainforests. Students then made a rain stick and took home some rainforest products to enjoy.

Standard Addressed: Science 5.2—Science & Society
